Spectacular national parks surround Alice Springs. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the arts. The central desert region of Australia is unique. The Alice Springs Correctional Centre holds prisoners of all security levels and with a focus on rehabilitation and integration. The centre is 25 kilometres south of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.
The Alice Springs Hospital is a major referral and teaching hospital for Central Australia, serving a population of more than 42,000 people in the area exceeding a million square kilometres, covering more than 60 per cent of the Northern Territory and extending into the bordering areas of South Australia and Western Australia. The hospital has more than 65,000 admissions annually and, with almost 84 percent of patients being Aboriginal it cares for some of the nation’s most vulnerable people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, and many conditions rarely seen elsewhere in the country.
