Finding the right job is about more than scrolling through listings. Knowing what you’re looking for, where to look and how to read an opportunity properly can make the search easier and help you focus on roles that are actually right for you.
Start with what you're looking for
Before you begin applying, think about what matters to you in your next role.
You might consider the type of work you enjoy, your existing skills and experience, where you can work, whether you’re looking for full-time, part-time or casual employment, and whether you’re interested in an apprenticeship or traineeship.
You don’t need to have your entire career mapped out. Having a general idea of what you want can simply make it easier to recognise the right opportunities when you see them.
Search beyond the job title
Different employers can use different titles for very similar roles.
If you only search for one exact job title, you may miss opportunities that suit your experience.
Try searching using:
Job titles you already know
Skills you have
Industries you're interested in
Locations where you can work
Broader terms related to the type of work you want
On InCareers, you can also use the available filters to narrow down current opportunities.
Read the whole job advertisement
The job title is only the starting point.
Before applying, look at what the employer is actually asking for. Pay attention to the responsibilities, required skills or qualifications, location, employment type, salary information where provided and application closing date.
Don't automatically rule yourself out because you don't meet every single point listed.
Consider whether you have transferable skills from previous employment, study, volunteering, community involvement or other experiences that demonstrate what you can bring to the role.
Look for employers you want to work with
Your job search can also start with the employer rather than the position.
If there are organisations or industries you're particularly interested in, keep an eye on their current opportunities and learn a little about the organisation before applying.
Understanding what an employer does can also help you decide whether the opportunity is right for you.
Keep track of your applications
Once you're applying for several positions, it can become surprisingly easy to lose track.
Keep a simple record of the:
Employer | Position | Date Applied | Closing Date | Application Status
Save a copy of the job advertisement too. It may no longer be online by the time you're invited to an interview, and you'll want to refer back to it when preparing.
Found something you want to apply for?
Take the time to tailor your application to the position rather than sending the same application everywhere.
